We will mainly be staying in Reykjavik and were planning a two day trip to Askja to see the lake in the summer of 2017. Where would be the best place to stay to access this? Are there tours from Reykjavik or flights to a nearby town? Where would it be best to stay to see Askja?

Various Tour operators offer day tours to Askja, but not from Reykjavík so you would want to take a domestic flight to Akureyri (the capital of the North) the day before the Askja tour. It's best to get closer to Askja than Akureyri the day before the Askja tour, otherwise the tour has to start extremely early and end very late.
