清迈市是清迈府的首府清迈府治县的一部分，也是泰国北部政治、经济、文化的中心。人口约120万人，是泰国第二大城市。 清迈是泰国北部最大的历史文化城市，也是泰北政治经济中心，为清迈府首府。13世纪时曾为元朝所占，并名为八百，属蒙庆宣慰司。，在1296年至1768年间为兰纳王国首都，兰纳王国其后于1774-1939发展为清迈王国的朝贡国。清迈距离曼谷700公里，倚靠着泰国最高的山。清迈在平河的流域中，平河是昭拍耶河的主要支流。清迈在泰语的意思是新城市，在兰纳王国1296年订定首都时所取的。清迈取代了清莱成为兰纳的首都。
