You could do it in an hour or take all day. When I went with children we went round once, took a break for lunch, then went back to see the otters being fed and try the rock pools. Finally, we went round to do the quiz, win prizes and explore the shop. That was around 4 hours in total.
Can you use the coffee shop without buying an aquarium ticket?

There are picnic areas outside. If you do leave to eat make sure to get your hand stamped so you can go back inside without paying again. I don't think they let you eat your own food …
