The synagogue is fascinating and a must see in my opinion, even for non-Jews such as myself. The Gothic Quarter is a real maze and the Ramblas is a big place...you really should have a map because it's difficult to navigate any other way. Getting lost in the Gothic Quarter is by no means a bad thing; it's beautiful, there are lots of hidden treasures, and it's not hard to just head back to the Ramblas to reorient yourself after. But if you are trying to see a specific site (like the synagogue) you really need a map to help you find it.
