Is this a place where my husband and I can take a rental car? Do we need an SUV? We are seasoned drivers and can handle a vehicle decently in adverse conditions but I was wondering if we were allowed to go there on our own or do we have to take a tour?

Don't worry, you may drive there on your own. We visited just few weeks ago with a small car, paved road, easy to drive. Short 10+ minutes detour from main road.
