President Donald Trump imposed sweeping 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imported into the United States Wednesday, a policy aimed at leveling the playing field for US manufacturing but a move that threatens to drive up prices on a broad range of consumer and industrial goods for Americans.

Both the European Commission and Canada have called the tariffs enacted by President Donald Trump “unjustified.”

By mid-2019, the tariffs were lifted for Canadian and Mexican imports, which accounted for 27% of the U.S.’s steel imports and 43% of its aluminum imports. The Biden administration later ended tariffs on European Union metals in 2021, amid record-high steel prices fueled by COVID-19 supply chain disruptions.
