Changes introduced by Microsoft in 2019 made it up to four times more expensive to run Windows Server outside the Azure public cloud – for example, on AWS, Google, or Alibaba's infrastructure.

In the second of this years' series we compare the two companies that dominate the market for cloud services. AWS remains the most widely used cloud platform with a market share of around 34%.

The upshot, they claim, is that customers face the devil's choice of migrating to Azure, or paying many times more to run their Windows and SQL Server-based apps on AWS or Google's cloud platform.
