The PAP comprises 10 major dams, including Sholayar, Parambikulam, Aliyar and Thirumoorthy Dam, four powerhouses, six main tunnels, numerous irrigation canals, branch canals, and supporting canals.

This dam was built to store surplus water from the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP). Farmers have been demanding that surplus water from Amaravathi dam should be diverted here during rainy season.
