Shares of BYD, the world’s largest electric-vehicle maker by deliveries, rose on Tuesday after the Chinese company said it’s rolling out a system that will recharge a vehicle in about the same time as it takes for people to fill up a car with gasoline.

Eunice Lee, the Asian autos analyst at Bernstein, an investment research company, cited Chinese rivals XPeng and Zeekr, whose respective 5C and 5.5C charging systems can add about 280 miles and 342 miles of range in 10 minutes. She was “generally impressed” by BYD’s claims, after it had lagged behind rivals.

The introduction of the new super charger will boost BYD’s EV sales, which until now most relied on plug-in hybrid models in China.
