The Duke of Wellington's legacy still towers over British history today. The hero of Waterloo, vanquisher of Napoleon – poet laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson hailed him as the 'last great Englishman'.
Wellington ordered his commanding Royal Engineer, Colonel Sir John Carmichael-Smyth, to prepare a map of the area of Waterloo. It was constructed in 1815 and partly drawn by Major John Sperling RE.
