A barn fire in Fitchburg has left a family mourning the loss of four horses. The fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

The horse, a 16-year-old mare, tested positive last month for the highly infectious equine herpesvirus Type 1.

The fire was successfully contained to the barn, with all surrounding properties protected from damage. Four horses who were in the barn died as a result of the fire. No other injuries were reported.
