王正方1938年生于湖南长沙，少年时曾在北京生活，1948年随父来台，于台湾大学毕业后赴美深造。1971年，他作为“保钓人士代表”访问大陆，被台当局列入黑名单致其长期无法返台。1982年，王正方辞去教职投入电影业，《北京故事》是其成名作之一。时至今日，《北京故事》在大陆豆瓣仍有7.5分的不俗评价。
