Acanthophora spicifera is the most widespread and successful alien alga in Hawai‘i. It appeared for the first time in Hawai‘i in the early 1950’s, most likely entering on a barge from Guam. The red alga is found on reefs and intertidal habitats.
Pyropia acanthophora var. robusta was morphologically distinguished from the nominate variety and Porphyra acanthophora var. brasiliensis E.C.Oliveira & Coll on the basis of its robust, longer, and wider thallus.
Abstract: Acanthophora spicifera (Vahl) Børgesen is the most widespread and in-vasive alien macroalga on coral reefs throughout the main Hawaiian Islands. This alga disperses from harbors and ports to coral reefs throughout the state, producing high quantities of biomass that affect a wide range of reef flora and fauna.
Forty-two years after its suspected introduction, Russell (1992) considered this species the most widespread and successful alien alga in Hawai‘i based on surveys in nearshore marine waters around Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai and Maui.
Shallow subtidal communities, 0-3 m depth, littoral pools and coastal lagoons; present all year round; well-developed fronds in summer and autumn. Described from both the Red Sea (Suez, Egypt) and the Mediterranean Sea (Alexandria, Egypt) (Delile, 1813, 1826, as …

Acanthophora spicifera is widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions in tidal and subtidal zones (Kilar and McLachlan, 1986). It is typically found in shallow reef flats between 1-8 m although has been reported to depths of 22 m in Florida, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
