Disease ecology is a sub-discipline of ecology concerned with the mechanisms, patterns, and effects of host-pathogen interactions, particularly those of infectious diseases. [1] For example, it examines how parasites spread through and influence wildlife populations and communities.

Research at SERC takes an interdisciplinary approach to disease ecology, studying how biological, chemical and physical aspects of the environment – alone and working together – can influence disease distribution, transmission and intensity.

Here we review the conceptual and mathematical foundations of disease ecology and consider how ecological and evolutionary studies can be used to improve disease control.

The Disease Ecology in a Changing World (DECO) program strategizes solutions to support nature, communities, health, and climate change mitigation. DECO researchers are working to understand those connections in collaboration with local communities.
