This is what I understand to be true so far. When introduced in the true SD90MAC (as opposed to 9043), the engine had some considerable problems. But, these problems have been resolved to the point where EMD feels confident enough to make the 16-265H available as a marine powerplant and in the new JT56ACe loco for China.

THE QUESTION: To the best of your knowledge or educated gut-feeling, would your RailRoad buy an EMD SD90-MAC (6000 hp "H" engine)? Could you support your reply with just a little detail? The reason I ask the above question is because it appears the only Co. currently selling any 6k hp units is GE.

In HO scale, to convert one of the new Kato UP SD90/43MAC’s to an SD90MAC-H, all you’d need is the Rail Power ‘H-kit’ conversion package, correct? (The one RP came out with to convert their SD90/43 shell to the 90-H.) 2nd: Are there any rumors if Kato will just run the H units? Thanks for the info.

The SD-80's look the SD-90 MAC's, but use the 710 series engine except that the engine has 20 cylinders instead of the 16 that is in the SD-70 !! In order for EMD to make a 5,000 h.p. model engine, all they had to do was take the 710 engine and add 4 more cylinders to get a an engine equal to a super size SD-45.

That is the Cummins Version of a Tier 4 Unit. Built on an EMD SD90 frame with modifications to make it compliant with EPA Standards. We saw it in Jasonville In at the Indiana Shops back on October 23 2018. We went to get permission from the then new Shop Boss after talking with 2 other employees but were denied.
