London’s first recorded Custom House building was constructed at Wool Quay by the Sheriff of London in 1382 during the reign of Richard II. The poet and author Geoffrey Chaucer was Comptroller of the Customs of Wools, Skins and Tanned Hides from 1374 until 1386, and based there for his work as manager of tax collectors.

In 979 King Ethelred introduced the first known customs duty. In 1275 the first Custom House was built on the Old Wool Quay east of the present site. Since then the present Custom House has been rebuilt several times. From 1956 the Board of Customs and Excise have also occupied King's Beam House in Mark Lane.

2014年12月7日 · The Custom House, on the north bank of the Thames in the City of London was formerly in use for the collection of customs duties. It was in use for many centuries and rebuilt on a number of occasions. The present building was designed by David Laing and dates from 1813. Grade I listed. Link. by N Chadwick.
