Despite a decline in both monetary and multidimensional poverty rates since 2000, Haiti remains among the poorest and most unequal countries in Latin America. Two years after the 2010 earthquake, poverty was still high, particularly in rural areas.
Haiti faces a deepening fragility trap, as structural challenges, institutional crisis, and persistent gang violence have com-pounded the poverty cycle. Living stan-dards are estimated to have deteriorated, with 36.4 percent of Haitians living in ex-treme poverty (less than US$2.15/day 2017 PPP)in2024(upfrom29.9percentin2020).
