The Armenian Church’s ties with the rest of Christianity were severed after its refusal to accept the Council of Chalcedon in AD 451, although contacts with Byzantium were not completely broken. Church buildings throughout the empire became sanctuaries, where persecuted and condemned people could take refuge to seek protection by the Church against the state. In this same tradition, all Orthodox Churches today do officially condemn the death penalty as an excessive power abuse by human governments.
