Benin (/ b ɛ ˈ n iː n / ⓘ ben-EEN, / b ɪ ˈ n iː n / bin-EEN; [9] French: Bénin ⓘ), officially the Republic of Benin (French: République du Bénin), is a country in West Africa. It was formerly known as Dahomey. [10] It is bordered by Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, Burkina Faso to the north-west, and Niger to the north-east.

Benin is a narrow country in west Africa. The country measures about 325 km (202 mi) at its widest point. It is between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer. Benin is bordered by Togo to the west, Burkina Faso and Niger to the north, Nigeria to the east, and the Bight of Benin to the south. The highest point is Mont Sokbaro at 658 m (2,159 ft).
