When the parasite gets into your intestine, it can cause symptoms like cramping and diarrhea. Healthcare providers treat amebiasis with antibiotics. The majority of infections restricted to the lumen of the intestine (“luminal amebiasis”) are asymptomatic. Amebic colitis, or invasive intestinal amebiasis, occurs when the mucosa is invaded. Symptoms include severe dysentery and associated complications.
