Early in 2024 I produced a set of plans and technical drawings to make a copy of one of the John Egan traditional wire-strung Irish harps, based on a 3D scan of one in the National Museum of Ireland. The harp shown has 37 brass wire strings.

I made these construction drawings in the spring of 2024, to show the design and construction of a traditional wire-strung Irish harp. The plans are based on a harp made by John Egan in the early 1820s. It has Egan’s serial number 1933, and it was made for the Irish Harp Society in Belfast.

2024年5月20日 · One of my recent projects has been to create a set of harpmakers’ plans and templates for making a 19th century style traditional wire-strung Irish harp. In the 1820s, the Belfast Harp School (organised and bankrolled by the Irish Harp Society) was training a whole new generation of traditional Irish harpers.

Today, plans are available from several harp sources, such as the Folk Harp Journal. There is also far more information now on the Internet that I had access to, for example at http://www.earlygaelicharp.info. Pre-Cromwell, harpers were the soul of Ireland, granted access everywhere as protected guests even in the middle of wars.

Our plans are all full-size, scale drawings. We have successfully built all of these instruments ourselves so we know these plans work. The plans provide all of the information you need to fashion the wood parts. Once you have made all the parts, use the included assembly instructions to put the instrument together.

For the first five harps, each plan set includes: Plans Sheet – showing the size of the harp, length of the sound board and angles for placing the base plate and cap. Detail sheets - Showing the scantlings for shaping the sound board as well as the fasteners that hold the neck, pillar, and sound box to each other
