Phyllis Young was born on February 24th, 1949 on the Standing Rock Reservation, which lies on the border of North and South Dakota.The Standing Rock Indian Reservation is mainly controlled by the Sioux Nation, who were driven out of their homes due to westward expansion in the 1800's.Before being placed into the Standing Rock reservation, the Sioux resided to the east side of the Missouri River.

The North Dakota Fighting Sioux women's basketball team is part of the athletic program at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It is a member of the NCAA Division I Summit League; the 2019–2020 season was their first in the new conference.

The North Dakota Fighting Sioux women's ice hockey team was the college ice hockey team at the Grand Forks campus of the University of North Dakota. They were members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) and competed in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I women ice hockey .
