Swelling or a mass is the first sign of olecranon (elbow) bursitis. Sometimes, the onset of this can be abrupt or gradual. The size of the bursitis can vary. The bursa can be very small, or it can grow to a soft golf ball-size mass at the tip of the elbow (see Figure 2). Most people seek medical care because they are concerned about the swelling.

Olecranon bursitis is a fairly common elbow condition where a small fluid-filled sac located at the tip of the elbow, known as the olecranon bursa, becomes inflamed. The bursa acts as a cushion between the skin and the bony part of the elbow and allows for smooth movement.

In some people we never know what causes this problem. In other people it can begin with trauma or injury to the area. Blood can fill the area, inflammation can occur, or infection can cause the problem.

Elbow bursitis in inflammation in the olecranon bursa — the fluid-filled sac that protects and cushions your elbow joint. It’s usually caused by overuse from your job or activities like sports. You’ll probably only need at-home treatments to help your bursa heal. Most people recover in three to six weeks.

Typically, the first symptom noticed is edema since the elbow skin is usually rather loose. Pain results from the bursa being stretched as swelling progresses. The pain is often exacerbated by bending or placing direct pressure on the elbow. Eventually the inflammation may restrict the elbow’s range of motion.

Patients who experience olecranon bursitis present with pain, swelling and often bruising over time. There may be deformity of the arm dependent upon the degree of displacement of the fracture. If the bursae is infected, it may exhibit warmth and redness.
