The TGV 001 set the world record for a non-electrified train set, reaching a speed of 190 mph in 1972, which has yet to be broken. However, due to the oil crisis in 1973, it was deemed unfeasible to utilize fossil fuels, thus, traction for the project switched to electric power.

15 minutes later, at 10:06, 325 pegs the new world speed record at 515.3 km/h (320.3 mph) at the bottom of the hill at kilometer 166.8. The train comes to a stop a few minutes later at kilometer 210, and the crew and minister celebrate with champagne.

TGV trains are capable of traveling at mind-boggling speeds of up to 357 mph (575 km/h). This speed was achieved by the TGV V150 train in 2007, breaking the world speed record for a conventional train. While not all TGV trains can reach this speed, most of them can go up to 200 mph (320 km/h) on dedicated high-speed tracks.
