Túrin Turambar was a man of the House of Hador in Middle-earth, who became a tragic hero of the First Age, as is recounted in Narn i Chîn Húrin ("The Tale of the Children of Húrin"). A young Túrin, while still in Hithlum, by Sara Maria Morello. Túrin was the only son of Húrin Thalion, Lord of Dor-lómin, and Morwen Eledhwen.

Thingol had a duty to look after Turin, not only to keep him safe but to also teach him how to be a man and warrior and to live in the increasingly dangerous world that was the first age. Turin was allowed to wander the woods and occasionally get into trouble so I don’t think protection was necessarily the number one priority over mentoring.
