6th Bomb Group - Pacific War & War over Japan: Preserve history, lessons & legacy for future generations to learn & appreciate.

The 6th BG played a significant role in winning the war against Japan. This was not only the bravery of the air crews, but also the Ground Crews. The 6th Bomb Group was part of the 313th Bombardment Wing of the 21st Bomber Command of the 20th Air Force.

The 6th Bomb Group along with other B29 Army Air Corps groups were responsible for ending the war through devastating mining, conventional, incendiary and atomic bombs dropped on Japan, including Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The 6th Bomb Group included the 24th, 39th and the 40th squadrons. Each squadron included air crews, ground crews and other service personnel. Each had their own separate tasks to perform in completing the missions assigned to the Group.

During World War II, the 6th Bombardment Group, Very Heavy was a B-29 Superfortress group assigned to Twentieth Air Force flying bombardment operations against Japan. Its aircraft were identified by a "R" inside a Circle painted on the tail.

6th Bomb Group B-29s and crews first landed on Tinian Island in January 1945, just five months after the Marianas Islands had been captured from Japan by divisions of the U.S. Army and Marines. The Navy SeaBees had built a single usable 8500 foot runway on North Field made of crushed coral for B-29 arrivals.
