The AN/SPS-49 radar is the navy’s principal long-range two-dimensional air search radar. As such it has been used on a variety of combatants including aircraft carriers, Aegis and non-Aegis cruisers, destroyers, frigates, and amphibious ships including LSDs and LHDs.

The SPS-49 will replace SPS-37A/43A radars in cruisers and supplement the SPY-1 radars in Aegis ships. The new Oliver Hazard Perry (FFG-7)-class frig­ates also have the SPS-49, and several carriers will get it in the future.

The AN/SPS-49(V) radar is a narrow beam, very long range, 2D air search radar that primarily supports the AAW mission in surface ships. The radar is used to provide long range air surveillance regardless of severe clutter and jamming environments.

The SPS-49 antenna is a parabolic reflector fed by a H-plane sectoral horn. The reflector is asymmetric with the wide dimension aligned horizontally and the H plane of the horn aligned vertically with the narrow dimension of the reflector.
