2019年8月28日 · The Guardhouse, one of the oldest and most significant structures on Alcatraz Island, housed the island's very first military prison. Shortly after California became a state, the U.S. Army took possession of Alcatraz and quickly recognized that the island's rocky cliffs and nearly inaccessible shoreline offered excellent defensive features.

2021年2月1日 · The Guard Tower was the last line for guards to secure the island. If the men on duty saw or heard anything unusual, they would sound the alarm that went out over the whole island. Long hours in the tower meant that it had to be equipped with all the necessary facilities.

Guard Tower at Dock: During the Federal Prison phase of the island, six guard towers were used to guard the island. The clear view from the towers by armed guards made prisoner escapes extremely difficult. Today, only one tower, at the dock stands.

Guard towers and catwalks were built in the 1930s once Alcatraz started operating as a federal prison. One tower overlooking the island’s dock still stands today and is one of the first structures you’ll see when arriving at Alcatraz. There is a special hinged steel window guard in the room marked "Stores." This is for receiving supplies in the hospital from the basement level outside the building. Recommend that this window be closed solid with a tool-proof window guard and that supplies for the hospital be brought up the stairs.
