Andrew Jackson was buried in the garden next to his wife. Throughout his life, Jackson expanded the site to an operation of 1,000 acres (400 ha), with 200 acres (81 ha) used for cotton, the commodity crop, and the remainder for food production and breeding and training racehorses.

Andrew Jackson's Hermitage is one of the largest, most visited presidential homes in the United States and one of Nashville's top-rated attractions. Located only minutes from downtown and Gaylord Opryland Resort, this is a must-do when visiting Music City.

The dwelling of formerly enslaved Alfred Jackson is located less than 200 feet northeast of the mansion; archeological excavations have revealed the locations of thirteen additional quarters occupied by enslaved peoples, throughout the property.

The original mansion was a brick, Federal-style house built by local carpenters and masons. As the architectural style was already losing favor in the "fashionable Eastern areas," the Hermitage underwent major remodeling by architect David Morrison during Jackson's presidency.
