Preparing for a Dig - Archaeological Institute of America
The success of an archaeological expedition depends, to a great extent, on the excavation team. Organization is a key factor in the smooth management of the work schedule, and the field director must be able to depend upon a responsive and responsible staff.
Archaeological sites are generally divided up into squares to help archaeologists record finds precisely as they dig. The small-scale digs described here are created in a square or rect-angular cake pan, in a rectangular shoe box, or (in the school-yard digs) in larger squares or rectangles dug into the ground.
The simulated dig teaches basics of archaeology, the logic of horizontal excavation, and the importance of keeping records and preserving the context of finds.

Interactive Digs Pompeii, Italy The Venus Pompeiana Project (VPP) is a collaboration between the University of Missouri-Columbia and Mount Allison University, under the auspices of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, to resume study of the Sanctuary of Venus at Pompeii.
