Atlas V[a] is an expendable launch system and the fifth major version in the Atlas launch vehicle family. It was designed by Lockheed Martin and has been operated by United Launch Alliance (ULA) [b] since 2006. It is used for DoD, NASA, and commercial payloads. It is America's longest-serving active rocket.

Atlas V uses a standard common core booster, up to five solid rocket boosters (SRBs), a Centaur upper stage in a single- or dual-engine configuration, and one of several sizes of payload fairings. Centaur is the world's highest-performing upper stage.

At 1.55 x 17.7 meters, the motors are currently the world's largest single segment solid. For Atlas V, Centaur, the world's first liquid hydrogen/oxygen upper stage, was stretched and upgraded.

The Atlas V common core booster (CCB) is 3.8 m (12.5 ft) in diameter and 32.5 m (106.5 ft) long. The booster’s tanks are structurally stable and constructed of isogrid aluminum barrels, spun-formed aluminum domes and intertank skirts. Atlas V booster propulsion is provided by the RD-180 engine system (a single engine with two thrust chambers).
