2024年4月25日 · The eastern rat snake is a colubrid native to North America. It is also known by the names pilot black snake, pilot snake, black rat snake, and chicken snake. In Florida, it is called the Everglades rat snake and yellow rat snake. It is mainly nocturnal in summer and active during the day in the spring and fall.

The yellow rat snake is a beautiful golden or olive color with four dark brown stripes down its spine. These stripes may be strikingly dark or almost invisible depending on the individual. Yellow Rats also have a smooth white or yellow belly without any markings and golden irises.

However, adults in the Florida peninsula can be yellow, orange, tan, or gray with four dark longitudinal stripes, while sometimes retaining the dark dorsal blotches found in juveniles. The tongue is mostly black. The scales are weakly keeled, and there are 25-27 dorsal scale rows at midbody.

The upper body has a white to yellow background with a strong pattern of black gray or brown blotches. The blotches alternate with smaller blotches on the sides.
