The most common construction method for beginner to intermediate bongo drums is by using staves–rectangular blocks of wood that are glued tightly together. Bongo shells can be carved from a large block of wood, but typically that is only the custom-made or premium bongos.

When you learn how to play bongo drums, you can experiment with basic strokes. Hit the edge of the drum with your palm. Let your fingers bounce off the drum’s head. Move your fingers back and forth, four inches from the drum’s center, experimenting with different sounds.
