What is this medication? CHLORHEXIDINE (klor HEX i deen) prevents skin infection. It is often used to clean and disinfect the skin after an injury or before a procedure. It works by killing or preventing the growth of bacteria on the skin.

Apply a thin layer of chlorhexidine cream or lotion to the affected areas of your skin. Follow the directions included in the packet. Skin cream can dry onto your clothes and bedding. This can make them more likely to catch fire. Avoid naked flames. Use your chlorhexidine treatment instead of soap or shower gel when you wash.

Chlorhexidine is used in disinfectants (disinfection of the skin and hands), cosmetics (additive to creams, toothpaste, deodorants, and antiperspirants), and pharmaceutical products (preservative in eye drops, active substance in wound dressings and antiseptic mouthwashes).
