Complex and dense cholinergic innervation is achieved in the brain from two categories of cholinergic neurons: the CINs—which synapse locally within a brain structure, and projecting cholinergic neurons—which send their axons to other structures (for review, see Allaway and Machold, 2017).

Here we identify actions of cholinergic signaling on cellular and synaptic properties of neurons in several brain areas and discuss the consequences of this signaling on behaviors related to drug abuse, attention, food intake, and affect.
