Comet ISON, formally known as C/2012 S1, was a sungrazing comet from the Oort cloud which was discovered on 21 September 2012 by Vitaly Nevsky (Віталь Неўскі, Vitebsk, Belarus) and Artyom Novichonok (Артём Новичонок, Kondopoga, Russia).

A number of NASA missions, including STEREO, are planning an observing campaign to observe the comet as it passes by the Sun. Below, we discuss the view that the STEREO observatories (plus SOHO and SDO) will have of Comet ISON as it swings by the Sun.

When first sighted, Comet ISON was 625 million miles (one billion kilometers) from the Earth and glowed at magnitude +18.8. This is a scale used by astronomers to measure the brightness of objects in the sky (the lower the number, the brighter the object).
