The first flag of East Germany, officially the German Democratic Republic, was a tricolour of black, red and gold, identical to the flags of the Weimar Republic, West Germany, and present-day Germany.

The first standard of the president had the shape of a rectangular flag in the colors black-red-gold with the inscription "President" in yellow in the red stripe, as well as "D.D.R." (contrary to the official abbreviation with dots) in the stripe below in black letters. The flag was surrounded by a stripe of yellow color.

Identical with the black-red-gold national flag of the Weimar Republic. Because it was also adopted by the Federal Republic, it was only in use from 1949 to 1959. The first constitution of the German Democratic Republic (adopted when the GDR was founded) did not mention a flag, just that the national colours were black-red-gold.

When the DDR was established in 1949 it was anticipated that Germany would eventually be reunified. Accordingly the national flag adopted was the plain black-red-gold horizontal tricolor that had been the German national flag of the Weimar Republic between 1919 and 1933.
