Dazai first appears floating down a river, apparently trying to commit suicide until he was accidentally found by a starved Atsushi. Afterward, he and his colleague Kunikida treat Atsushi to food while listening to his story about how he ends up at the river while hungry.

Osamu Dazai (Japanese: 太宰 治, Hepburn: Osamu Dazai) is a fictional character featured in the manga series Bungo Stray Dogs, written by Kafka Asagiri and drawn by Sango Harukawa.

Dazai Osamu is a popular character in the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom, as well as a major character in the series. Dazai first appeared in Chapter 1 of the manga, when Nakajima Atsushi rescues him from a suicide attempt by drowning in the river. He became popular among fans for his good looks, ridiculous mannerisms, tragic past, and cunning intellect.

Nakajima Atsushi, a starving, homeless orphan, encounters a man floating down the river who appears to be drowning. Atsushi dives in and rescues the man, who comes to consciousness and introduces himself as the suicidal maniac, Osamu Dazai.

While he is standing by a river, on the brink of starvation, he rescues a man whimsically attempting suicide. That man is Dazai Osamu, and he and his partner Kunikida are members of a very special detective agency.
