The new Dunshaughlin Union workhouse was erected in 1840-41 on a five-acre site 1.5 miles to the south of Dunshaughlin. Designed by the Poor Law Commissioners' architect George Wilkinson, the building was based on one of his standard plans to accommodate 400 inmates.

After the formation of the Irish Free State in 1922, the Dunshaughlin Workhouse went through a number of different uses, including a school and a courthouse. The Dunshaughlin Workhouse is currently in a state of disrepair, but the walls of many of the buildings still stand.
