Found over a century ago growing in a garden, Ilex 'Golden King' is just one of several popular varieties of a garden hybrid, Ilex x altaclerensis, bred partly from the common English holly, Ilex aquifolium. It's very hardy and tolerates most soils, as well as seaside air and atmospheric pollution, and fruits well in sun or shade.

A wonderful holly for any garden, Ilex 'Golden King' has lovely dark green and gold leaves. Plentiful red berries make this a real favourite for late autumn and early winter.

Description: Despite its name, 'Golden King' is in fact a female holly that makes a compact, conical, evergreen shrub, and bears broad, ovate, slightly spiny leaves that are dark green and margined yellow. Produces small white flowers followed by pretty red berries in the autumn/winter, although the crop will be more abundant with a male nearby.
