Pachypodium namaquanum, also known as halfmens or elephants trunk, is a Southern African succulent plant in the family Apocynaceae. [3][4] The genus name Pachypodium is from the Greek for 'thick foot', an allusion to its swollen base, while the species name namaquanum is a reference to Namaqualand.

What makes this tall plant with a spiny trunk capped with a rosette of large deciduous leaves even more interesting in its natural habitat, is that all of the plants bow their heads towards the north. Marloth, writing in 1932, described the uncanny sight of hundreds of tall stems all with their heads turned to face the midday sun.

One of the most famous plants is the noordpool (North Pole) or halfmens plant (half-person). The plant can be recognised by its distinctive rosette of leaves, resembling a green afro set atop a narrow trunk that can grow to as tall as 3m. From a distance the plant is often said to resemble a small person, hence the name.
