Isabel captured the attention of the FCMP during the second week of September 2003. Initially, it appeared that the storm’s path would bring in within striking distance of Florida’s Atlantic coastline as it emerged from the Greater Antilles.

(October 11, 2024) Lakeland, FL | There are some areas around Lakeland that were hit very hard with flooding. The Lakeland area experienced over 12 inches of rain in 24 hours taxing the City’s stormwater system. Water is starting to subside, but some ponding is still evident.

Prior to Hurricane Isabel, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) had completed comprehensive hurricane evacuation studies (HES) for the predominantly coastal communities in all three states.

Hurricane Isabel’s strong winds produced large ocean swells that traveled west-northwest toward the Bahama Islands. Although observational data are lacking in the wave-generation area, these swells were likely made larger as Isabel moved west over a long stretch of ocean in the direction of the strongest winds, producing a longer fetch.
