The School of Music is organised as a Corps of the Army and as such it contains a Directorate, a Headquarters incorporating the Army No.1 Band and one detached military bands, namely The Band of 1 Brigade and Band of the 2 Brigade.

The band, which was the first of four military bands to be established between 1923 and 1936, is the premier military band of the Irish Defence Forces. It performs on all major ceremonial occasions, including the presidential inauguration.

Between 1924 and 1936 a school and three further military bands, all under the Corps title of The Army School of Music, were established. General Mulcahy’s idea of bringing music and performances of a worthy standard to the civilian population was nurtured, and in time flourished.
