Spear & shield vs pike - History Forum
2016年2月2日 · Basically, if you required to have a shield, it was because you had enough income to afford one. The 12th century English regulations start with a minimum of gambeson, helmet, and spear, which would seem to be more expensive than just shield and spear, which had been the standard in Anglo-Saxon times. So I don't think cost had much to do with it.
How effective is Spear/Shield combo compared to Sword/Spear?

2022年1月31日 · I will reframe this as a general heavy horseman with lance and bow versus a heavy footman with a spear and shield Both the horseman and spearman have a polearm, sword, and shield and heavy armour and helm. That may just be because "spear and shield" had been the main equipment since the Bronze Age, so guys covered in mail still carried one, but also because there really weren't polearms aside from spears. Plus your shield has your coat of arms on it (as if the surcoat and lance penon weren't enough!)

How did Hoplites Thrust Their Spears in a Phalanx?
2018年10月3日 · However, to do this the hoplite would have to hold it near the middle, reducing the reach of the spear. Another theory is a sliding overarm thrust where the spear is more or less thrown at short range but while the shaft is still within the loose grip of the wielder. This concept is explained well in this video.
Overarm vs Underarm Spear and Shield debate. - History Forum
2014年6月4日 · Overarm, for soldiers in formation. A spear is not a gladius for close combat, its usage was different and it was better to keep it high; it left more functionality also to the shield for the single and for the line, it protects more: if you use the spear underarm you will have to keep the shield not exactly in front of you [in hand to hand …
