One of the most well-known Europeans to travel the silk road in Medieval times was Marco Polo (1245-1324), a merchant, explorer and writer who recorded his travels in the book "Livres des merveilles du monde" (Book of the world's marvels), published around the year 1300.

Marco Polo is arguably the most famous Western traveler to have journeyed on the Silk Road. As a young merchant, he began his journey to China in 1271 and his travels lasted for 24 years. During this time he became the confidant of Khubilai Khaan (1214-1294).

Marco Polo had traveled along what would become known as the Silk Route. The reason for the name, of course, was simple: silk was one of the most prized commodities that came from the Far East to Europe.
