Morazán was a major stronghold of the guerrilla movement during the 1979-1992 civil war. The infamous El Mozote massacre took place in this department in the village of El Mozote on December 11, 1981, when Salvadoran armed forces killed an estimated 900 civilians in an anti-guerrilla campaign.

Morazán es uno de los catorce departamentos que conforman la República de El Salvador. Su cabecera departamental es San Francisco Gotera, que a la vez es la más poblada del departamento. Está ubicado en la región oriental del país, limitando al norte con La Paz (Honduras), al este con La Unión, y al sur y al oeste con San Miguel.
