The move away from the old working uniform included a replacement for not only the jacket and cap, but also the venerable chambray shirt and dungaree trousers. The new uniform consisted of a utility jacket, utility cap, utility jumper (long and short sleeve) and utility trousers.

On 3 June 1943 the uniform was extended to include Chief Petty Officers. On 31 March 1944 cooks and stewards were permitted to wear the gray uniform. The Navy abolished use of "grays" on 15 October 1949.

2024年12月13日 · I scrolled through a ton of photos on the Navy Band Facebook page, of which I found exactly one photo of this type being worn. The aiguilette on this uniform is on the opposite side of the Chief's, but there's no holes or wear to indicate it was ever worn on that side. Likewise, no holes in the collar for rank insignia being worn.
