May 28, 2020 · We describe a Late Neolithic/Early Chalcolithic (6 th millennium BCE) genetic cline stretching from Western Anatolia (i.e., area around the Sea of Marmara) to the lowlands of the Southern Caucasus that was formed by an admixture process that started at the beginning of Late Neolithic (∼6500 years BCE).

This article discusses findings from excavations at Arslantepe–Malatya. Arslantepe is a tell about 4.5 hectares in extension and 30 meters high, at the heart of the fertile Malatya Plain, some 12 kilometers from the right bank of the Euphrates, and surrounded by mountains, which, in the past, were covered by forests.

In the Near East, the earliest indicators of bureaucracy in relation to trade are attested in Syro-Mesopotamia during the Obeid period, becoming more elaborate by the Uruk era. The first clear evidence of trade-related bureaucracy in Anatolia is manifested at Arslantepe in the Late Chalcolithic with the emergence of a palatial system.

Research and excavation at the site of Arslantepe (the mound of the lion) in Eastern Anatolia have been carried out annually since 1961 by several generations of archaeologists, professors and scholars, in a multinational team lead by the Sapienza University of Rome, in strong collaboration with the Turkish authorities and colleagues.
