Many of the ceramic types illustrated and described within this website represent forms that were largely (or exclusively) produced and used within the modern boundaries of the state of New Mexico. A few types were made elsewhere but are commonly found in New Mexico.

The most celebrated and recognized art form of the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico, Pueblo pottery is known around the world for its remarkable beauty and craftsmanship. It has been made in much the same way for over a thousand years, with every step of creation completed by hand.

New Mexico Potters and Clay Artists (NMPCA) promote excellence and creativity in the clay arts, and further their understanding and appreciation throughout New Mexico. We foster educational programs, arrange exhibition opportunities, and provide a communication forum for the exchange of ideas, information and inspiration.

Historically there are sixteen pottery producing Pueblos along the Rio Grande valley of Northern New Mexico as well as the Western Pueblos of Acoma, Zuni and Hopi. Also included in the pueblo pottery tradition are the Mojave, Maricopa, and Yuma cultures in Southern Arizona.
