For beginners, a keys chart can be incredibly helpful for memorizing the layout of the keyboard and understanding how different notes and intervals fit together.

In this lesson we will learn the notes that correspond to the various keys on the piano keyboard. Take a look at the keyboard in the picture below. Firstly, you will notice that the keys are black and white. But if you look more closely you will notice a pattern with the black keys.

Piano keys are laid out in a 12 note pattern (above). While there are many notes on a piano, it’s really 12 notes being repeated over and over. On an 88 key acoustic piano it is repeated over 7 times. The 12 notes are C, C-Sharp (D-Flat), D, D-sharp (E-Flat), E, F, F-Sharp (G-Flat), G, G-Sharp (A-Flat), A, A-Sharp (B-Flat), and B.

So how do we get 88 keys on a piano if there’s only 12 different notes? Well, it’s actually pretty simple. The same 12-note pattern of piano keys just keeps repeating itself over and over across the length of the keyboard. In order to master the piano layout, all you gotta do is learn to spot this 12-note pattern. That’s it!
